11-Year-Old Boy Tragically Dies In Bicycle Crash Just Days Into New School Year

A Connecticut community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of an 11-year-old boy who died following a bicycle crash involving a school bus only days into the new school year.

Torren O’Grady was riding his bicycle in North Stonington on the morning of September 2 when the devastating collision occurred near the intersection of Old Colony and Pinecrest roads.

The accident happened at approximately 8:30 a.m., just five days after students had returned to school.

A Community Left Heartbroken

News of the tragedy quickly spread throughout North Stonington, leaving students, teachers, friends and neighbors struggling to process the sudden loss.

North Stonington Public Schools decided to dismiss students early that day so children could return home and spend time with their families.

School officials also made additional support available, including counselors, emotional-support dogs and other resources for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Support Pours In For Torren’s Family

In the days following Torren’s death, members of the community came together to support his parents, Mat and Jourdan O’Grady.

Friends of the family organized an online fundraiser to help them during the incredibly difficult period and to create a lasting memorial in Torren’s honor.

The response was immediate. Within days, more than $22,000 had reportedly been raised.

A separate fundraising campaign was also organized through Fairview Retirement Community in Groton, where Torren’s uncle has worked for many years. That effort raised thousands of dollars more.

A Touching Tribute Appears At The Crash Site

Residents also began leaving flowers and candles near the location where the crash occurred.

The growing roadside memorial became a place where members of the community could stop, remember Torren and show support for his grieving loved ones.

But another tribute was especially meaningful because of one of Torren’s favorite activities.

The Lacrosse Community Honors Him

Torren was a member of the Stonington Bears Youth Lacrosse program.

Following his death, families were encouraged to leave porch lights on and place lacrosse sticks outside their homes as a tribute to the young player.

The gesture quickly became another powerful reminder to Torren’s family that an entire community was standing beside them.

Family Asks For Privacy

As tributes continued to appear, Torren’s relatives asked the public to give the family privacy while they mourn their unimaginable loss.

His uncle described the family as heartbroken and asked people to respect their need for space during the difficult days ahead.

Authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. At the time of the initial reports, the school bus driver had not been charged.

A Young Life Remembered

For a community that had only just begun a new school year, the tragedy has been especially difficult to comprehend.

Yet the flowers, fundraisers, porch lights and lacrosse sticks displayed throughout the area have shown just how deeply Torren touched the lives of those around him.

What began as an ordinary school morning ended in unimaginable heartbreak — but the community’s response has made sure Torren will not be forgotten.
