What began as an ordinary summer day at a Washington beach ended in heartbreak after a 6-year-old boy suffered devastating injuries in a freak accident involving a massive piece of driftwood.
Killian Gonzales had been spending time at Little Squalicum Beach in Bellingham with his sister and a babysitter when the accident happened on July 8.
A Heavy Log Shifted Without Warning
According to the family, Killian was playing near a makeshift structure built from large driftwood logs when one of the pieces suddenly shifted.
He tried to get away, but the heavy timber struck the back of his head and pinned him beneath it.
Emergency crews rushed to the beach and began life-saving treatment while his parents hurried to the scene.
Because of the seriousness of his injuries, Killian was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.
Doctors Fought To Save Him
Killian suffered multiple skull fractures and severe injuries to the back of his brain, according to his parents.
Doctors closely monitored swelling and pressure in his brain over the following days while the family waited for answers.
His mother, Sonja McCartney, described the experience as every parent’s worst nightmare, while his father, Marcos Gonzales, spoke about how difficult it was to accept that the accident had really happened.
The Family Shared A Heartbreaking Update
Despite the efforts of doctors and emergency workers, Killian’s family announced that he died from his injuries several days after the accident.
The news devastated relatives, friends and members of the Bellingham community who had been following his condition and hoping for his recovery.
His older sister had been at the beach when the accident occurred. The family said the siblings were extremely close and that the tragedy had been especially difficult for her.
Community Rallied Around The Family
A fundraising campaign was created to help the family with medical bills, travel, food and other expenses connected with the emergency.
Support quickly poured in from people who wanted to help the family through an unimaginable loss.
The family also stressed that what happened appeared to be a terrible accident rather than something anyone could have predicted.
