A Kentucky grandmother’s desperate decision during a tornado may have helped save the lives of two very young children after the storm tore apart her home.
Clara Lutz was caring for 15-month-old Kaden and 3-month-old Dallas in Hopkins County when severe weather moved into the area. As conditions worsened, she tried to protect the babies the best way she could.
She Put The Babies In The Bathtub As The Storm Closed In
As the tornado approached, Lutz placed the two children inside a bathtub along with a blanket, pillow and Bible. She stayed nearby as the wind and pressure intensified around the house.
Moments later, the storm turned violent.
According to Lutz, the home began shaking hard, and the force of the tornado became overwhelming. She said the bathtub was suddenly ripped away from her as the storm tore through the property.
During the chaos, she was also struck in the back of the head by the toilet tank.
Her Home Was Left In Ruins
Once the tornado passed, Lutz found herself surrounded by devastation. Much of the house had been destroyed, leaving behind little more than debris and the home’s foundation.
But her focus was not on the damage — it was on the children.
She began searching frantically through the wreckage, terrified and unsure where the babies had been carried during the storm.
The Bathtub Was Found Outside
What rescuers discovered next sounded almost impossible.
The bathtub was eventually found outside the destroyed house, upside down in the yard. Beneath it were the two children.
Authorities helped reunite Lutz with Kaden and Dallas, turning what had seemed like an unimaginable tragedy into a stunning survival story.
One Of The Babies Needed Medical Care
Although both children survived, the younger baby, Dallas, was injured during the ordeal. Lutz said he had a large bump on the back of his head, and doctors later found bleeding in his brain.
He was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for additional treatment.
By the time Lutz arrived at the hospital, however, she said doctors told her the bleeding had stopped — another huge relief for the family.
An Extraordinary Survival Story
The children’s parents reportedly lived elsewhere in Hopkins County, and their home escaped most of the storm’s destruction.
For Lutz, the terrifying minutes after the tornado were filled with panic as she searched for the children she had tried so hard to shield. In the end, the very bathtub she used as their shelter became the thing that helped protect them.
The story has stood out as one of the most remarkable accounts to emerge from the tornado’s destruction.
