70-Year-Old Hiker Vanishes on Remote Michigan Island — A Week Later, Rescuers Find Him Alive

A family’s worst nightmare turned into an extraordinary rescue after a 70-year-old hiker who disappeared on one of America’s most remote islands was found alive a week later.

Craig Berg, 70, had been hiking alone in Isle Royale National Park, a rugged wilderness surrounded by Lake Superior.

He was expected to leave the island on September 5.

But when Berg failed to return as planned, concern quickly turned into a large-scale search involving multiple agencies.

A Search Across Remote Wilderness

Isle Royale is far different from a typical national park.

The island sits in Lake Superior and contains miles of rugged trails, dense forests and isolated wilderness. There are no roads connecting the interior of the island, making search operations especially difficult.

Search crews combed the area from both the ground and the air.

The operation included personnel from the National Park Service, Michigan State Police, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies.

Michigan State Police troopers and K-9 units were also transported to the island to help search for the missing hiker.

Days Passed With No Sign of Him

As the search continued, every passing day made the situation more concerning.

Berg was alone in an isolated environment where weather conditions can change quickly and help may be miles away.

His family had no way of knowing exactly where he was or what condition he was in.

Then, one week after he had been expected to return, rescuers finally received the news everyone had been hoping for.

He Was Found Alive

On September 12, Berg was located on Isle Royale with help from backpackers in the area, Michigan State Police troopers and K-9 units.

He was alive and alert.

Authorities said Berg was injured and suffering from hypothermia when he was found.

After spending approximately a week missing in the wilderness, the discovery immediately turned the search operation into an urgent medical rescue.

A Coast Guard Helicopter Was Called In

Reaching Berg was only part of the challenge.

Because of the remote terrain, he could not simply be placed into an ambulance and driven to a hospital.

A U.S. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Traverse City responded to the island.

The crew hoisted Berg from the wilderness and flew him to Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport in Michigan.

Emergency medical personnel were waiting when the helicopter arrived, and Berg was then taken to a hospital for treatment.

His Son Revealed What Happened

According to Berg’s son, his father became lost while hiking and at some point lost his phone and wallet in a marsh.

He reportedly spent days attempting to find other people before he was finally located.

Despite being injured and hypothermic, Berg survived long enough for searchers to reach him.

His family was later able to bring him home following the rescue and medical treatment.

Why Isle Royale Can Be So Difficult to Search

Isle Royale National Park is one of the most isolated national parks in the United States.

The island can only be reached by ferry, seaplane or private watercraft.

Much of the park consists of wilderness trails rather than roads, and its remote location makes even routine rescue operations more complicated.

The park includes approximately 165 miles of hiking trails and dozens of wilderness campgrounds.

That isolation is part of what attracts hikers to Isle Royale — but it also means that when something goes wrong, getting help can take time.

A Rescue Made Possible by Teamwork

Authorities credited the successful outcome to cooperation between search crews, law enforcement officers, Coast Guard personnel and members of the public who were on the island.

Michigan State Police Lt. Ben Eckola said officials were thankful Berg had been found alive and recognized the many people involved in the operation.

Coast Guard officials also pointed to teamwork between first responders and the community as a key part of the successful rescue.

A Story That Could Have Ended Very Differently

There are still questions about everything Berg experienced while he was missing.

But after seven days of searching, one detail mattered more than anything else.

He had been found alive.

For a family that spent days waiting for news, the search ended with the outcome they had desperately hoped for.

A 70-year-old man had survived alone in the remote wilderness long enough for rescuers to finally bring him home.
